In the construction process, basic function of a fabricator is to provide all necessary shop drawings and construction documents to the contractor. These drawings are prepared after thorough review of the design drawings, specifications and bidding documents provided by the structural engineer.
Fabrication drawings commonly include the following:
# Structural Element Drawings
They are for basic structural members, such as web steel joists, must be sealed, signed and dated by the Structural Engineer.
# Erection Drawings
They are primarily show the placement of structural members, connections and components to be supplied by the fabricator. When these drawings include design by the Structural Engineer, the drawings shall be sealed, signed and dated by the Engineer.
# Connection Design or Shop Fabrication Drawings
These are provided by the fabricator shall give all information necessary for shop personnel to assemble and fabricate the components. These drawings shall be sealed, signed and dated when incorporating design by the Engineer.
# Construction Engineering Drawings
These drawings provided by the contractor shall cover load analyzes, temporary bracing and erection sequence. They shall be sealed, signed and dated by a qualified member.
Drawing submission should be reviewed for common compliance with the structural Contract Documents but generally the review does not include issues such as checking dimensions and review of the safety measures. The General Contractor is required to review the submission before it gets reviewed by the SER.
Fabricator should review the shop drawings and other submission in conformation with the Contract Documents. When required, the shop drawings should bear the signature and seal of the responsible Structural Engineer. The Engineer whose seal and signature appear on the drawings is responsible for the design of the Structural Members and connections indicated.
