Did you know, you can lose a whopping 20% of a home's heat through your windows? Well-fitted, quality insulated windows can keep you cool in the summer and insulated in the winter, but old, poorly fitted windows can help turn your home into a money-leaking ice box.

But a simple upgrade to double glazing could stop the leak and slash annual heating bills by around £140*.

So if you're looking for new windows, follow our guide to the different options available - you could save money on your energy bills.

Single glazing

Generally speaking, this is your cheapest window option. It's also the least energy efficient as only one sheet of glass protects you from the elements, allowing more heat to escape and cold air to get in. You'll have to heat your house for longer to keep rooms warm, resulting in an increase in your household utility bills. Typically, a standard, single-glazed casement window will set you back around £300 each.

Double glazing

The appeal of double-glazed windows is that they reduce heat loss in your home, provide noise insulation, and also limit window condensation. They do all this by forming an insulated barrier of trapped air between two panes of glass.

Pros:

* Installing double glazing in your home could cut heat loss by half and save around £140 on your annual heating bills*.
* It's also an eco-friendly choice, saving you 720kg of CO2 a year*.
* They also provide noise insulation for your home
* They reduced window condensation

Cons:

* Double glazing the entire house can be pricey. Expect to pay around £200 for a standard, double-glazed casement window. If your budget is tight, just double-glaze windows in rooms that cost you the most to heat. Remember, you will save money on your energy bills as you will need less heat to warm your home.

Top tip: If double glazing is too expensive, you could fit secondary glazing to supplement existing windows. This is achieved by inserting another pane of glass, usually on the inside. This does not affect the look or security and will still save money by cutting heat loss and draughts.

Energy efficient windows

Energy efficient windows contain an invisible sheet of metal in between the panes, which makes the glass more heat reflective. This has the effect of keeping homes cool in summer and warm in winter.

Pros:

*
They can be made using any frame material - aluminium, PVC-U, steel or timber - or a combination of materials.

The British Fenestration Ratings Council rates these windows by heat loss and heat gain in an easy-to-understand A to G rating system.

* By switching over to energy efficient windows, you could reduce your energy bill by 18% a year**.

Cons:

* Energy efficient windows are expensive. Expect to pay around £800 for a standard, energy efficient casement window.
* Energy efficient windows should increase the value of your home if you sell.

Note: If you live in a listed or historic property, or in a conservation area or an area of outstanding national beauty, building regulations may restrict any works to windows. Always contact your local authority before carrying out any such upgrading works.

If you're thinking of upgrading your windows to save money on your gas and electricity bills, remember that you could also save money by switching to a cheaper energy provider.

*according to the Energy Saving Trust

**In an electrically heated house, according to DTI Quarterly Energy Prices

Architectural Shingles Assortment

Architectural shingles vary in sizes and materials from which they are made. However they are called, these roofing products provide unique three-dimensional appearance that rivals the frequent look of the natural wood shake. The basic design of the shingles still suggests the depth and surface of the usual roofing materials, but the variations make the shingles distinct in their own ways.

Depending on the product, as well as the sales regions, features of architectural shingles vary. Most are available in either "English" or "Metric" dimensions. Their weight is usually between 240 to 340 pounds, which results to the shingles' high resistance to strong winds and extreme weather conditions. Other attributes of shingles include resistance to algae growth, especially in damp regions. This design feature also helps prevent the black streaking commonly visible on shingles in areas with humidity and rainfall totals.

The main components of shingles include mat base made of fiber glass and asphalt that is carefully refined. Other than these basic materials, manufacturers also tend to require additional underlayment in architectural shingles to prevent leakage and/or waterproofing. The shingles are also available in different colors, but availability varies on different areas.

Shingle types may be classified based on the materials used. Aluminum shingles, though not considered as an alternative for residential areas, are now being made to resemble cedar shakes, slate and clay tiles. Long lasting, energy efficient and recyclable, they do not rust, rot, tear, or become infested by bugs or mold. Another type is made from copper, which is a strong, resilient, and environment-friendly metal. Copper shingles are often preferred by many people because even though it has a tendency to change color after a certain period of time due to chemical reactions with the atmosphere, it doesn't dry out or crack. Furthermore, no extra roofing reinforcement is needed, which minimizes expenses. There are other metal architectural shingles gaining popularity nowadays because of their stylish appearance and practicality. Being modernized, they can easily be painted to suit any style of roof. To make metal shingles resistant to corrosion, they are coated with zinc. Also, they are not subject to attack from mold, insects, or rot.

Shingles are also made from non-metal materials. These types are the older forms of architectural shingles that are still stylish and classical at the same time. Slate shingles, for one, are the elegant and durable that survived the changes in design with the passing of time and generation. Though now one of the most expensive roofing products available in the market, it is very desirable, especially in areas prone to forest fires because they are virtually fire resistant. Solar shingles, made from thin layers of amorphous silicon and stainless steel, are among the latest technology that helps consumers harness solar energy. They are used in commercial, residential and agricultural structures.

The assortment of various architectural shingles made from different materials showcases to different areas and regions depending on several functions as well as weather conditions. Home and structural owners ranging from commercial to agricultural industries have wider options of roof systems to choose from considering life span, efficiency and durability.

Don't sweat the details? Hey, not good advice when it comes to framing your home.

Your home's framing structure dictates the quality and strength of your final product. You'll want to pay close attention to every detail. But, there's more than one way to build a quality frame.

Your Major Home Framing Choices and Their Advantages

Before you have your blueprints drawn, you need to choose the framing method. This is vital because the material choice and engineering work depend upon it. All good blueprints identify and list these materials.

1) Traditional wood/stick framing:

Materials

Wood stud framing is probably the least expensive of the choices you can make. The availability of product is usually the greatest. This is especially true if you're buying un-assembled product (not pre-nailed panels.)

Labor

With wood stick framing, you are dealing with the most common materials used in the USA, Canada and most of Australia. This makes finding experienced labor easy.

2) Site built steel framing:

Materials

Steel framing can be more eco-friendly with its longevity and its proclivity for effective recycling. The cost is not much different than wood, it is straighter and more uniform, and it's lighter weight.

Labor

Finding labor for steel framed homes is getting easier. If you're a do-it-yourselfer that is used to working with wood stick framing, you should be aware that the process requires some different skills.

3) Panelized steel or wood framing:

Materials

Panelized wall systems reduce the amount of labor you have to pay for, or do on site. The price of labor is built in to the panels you buy. These panels save you time and money on the building site.

Labor

Well-built panels can allow you to hire fewer and potentially less skilled framers. You will pay more for the lumber (as panels) because of the fact you're purchasing labor as well. However, much of that labor is assembly line type work and inexpensive.

4) Structural Insulated Panels or SIPs:

Materials

These panels will cost more than traditional panels but they save in other areas. For one, the insulation is already part of the wall, therefore does not have to be added. They may also provide a more energy efficient home, saving in energy bills giving you a better life-time value.

Labor

Labor can be an issue depending upon availability of experienced SIP construction contractors. Always check with your local trade contractors before you have your architect design your home with SIP panels.

5) Insulating Concrete Forms or ICFs:

Materials

The materials involved with ICFs are foam blocks, cement, and steel (rebar.) They can be used for basements and walls. Thermal mass provided by the cement can help with the heating and cooling of your home.

Labor

This, like SIPs, can be a do it yourself project but you truly will need direction and help. Many ICF suppliers will "train" you to a degree. Be careful designing with ICFs if you cannot find experienced contractors and if you aren't comfortable doing it yourself.

What's Your Number One Goal?

Your choice will be dependent upon your approach. Are you a do-it-yourself builder? Are you interested in speed? Do you want the highest energy efficiency? Asking the right questions will narrow your choices and get you what you want.

Balance everything together, make your choice, and stick with it. Once your approach is built in to your blueprints, resist making major changes.

Will you live in the home for years? Choose what makes the best long term sense for you.

Because the new windows are made with insulated glass, they are more energy efficient than traditional windows that can be very drafty. In some states, you can get a rebate on your fuel bill if you install energy efficient windows. Over a period of time, the windows will pay for themselves when it comes to heating and cooling costs alone.

If you have old wooden windows in your home, chances are that you have old paint on the windows. In most cases, the paint is lead based. Getting rid of these windows simply for this purpose makes sense as lead based paint has been linked to a variety of diseases, including cancer.

When you choose your replacement windows, take a look at the many different styles that are available. You can get vinyl replacement windows that slide open. These are the least expensive of all replacement windows and have thick, insulated glass. Vinyl windows are preferred by many homeowners because they are maintenance free.

Other options in Replacement Windows include those that are made of wood as well as aluminum. Many homeowners today, however, are opting for the value as well as convenience of the vinyl windows that are made by all of the leading window companies.

Some companies that offer top replacement windows for your home include Hurd Windows and Doors, Crystal Windows and Doors, Lang Exteriors and Simonton Windows and Doors. These companies have been manufacturing replacement windows for years and offer state of the art technology as well as innovative designs in their products.

You can measure your windows and install them yourself or you can have someone install the windows for you. Replacement windows are not difficult to install. In most cases, it is more difficult to remove the existing windows than put in the new, replacement windows. However, even someone with the most rudimentary carpentry skills can manage to install replacement windows. Larger windows, such as patio door windows and bay windows, will require some help.

Take a look at the Replacement Windows
online and see the different options that are available to you. If it has been a while since you took a look at new windows, you will be very impressed with the designs that are now available. You will notice the difference in your energy costs right away as well. Replacement windows are a way to improve not only the beauty, but the energy efficiency of your home.

Its Built with Styrofoam Panels

Marquis Construction thinks they have found a way to meet their own needs and their buyers'. They build with SIPs - 4 & 6-inch-thick sections of EPS foam, like the material from which coffee cups are made, sandwiched between sheets of galvanized steel.

The panels, 4 feet wide, snap together with a T&G joint so they can be assembled quickly by workers. The foam is laminated between sheets of steel.

The panels, known as SIPs, have been around for 60 years, but only in the last ten years have they begun to be used in mainstream of construction

"It's a thermal and structural shell," the builder said homes are certified to withstand winds up to 140 mph, making it hurricane worthy. The absence of wood means it is inhospitable to termites. "There's no food value there,"

Marquis says their customers "immediately grasp the concept that a solid foam-core house has got to be much more energy efficient than conventional . It really sells itself."

In addition to energy efficiency, the steel panels provide a cleaner IAQ, mold resistive environment. They carry a 20 year corrosion warranty. They surpass Florida's hurricane codes, are impact tested and used for hurricane shelter construction in Ft, Meyers, FL.
Steel SIPs construction will reduce insurance premiums up to 53% in hurricane prone areas over wood frame construction.

Panels are easily and readily available for delivery through out the southeast US with a 2 week lead time.

Should I buy Andersen Windows?

Are Andersen windows good windows? Yes they are. Andersen has a fine reputation in not only the new construction window business, but also in the replacement windows lines as well.

Will you pay more for Andersen windows? Most probably you will. Andersen commands usually the highest price in the market place for its windows, most likely because of its long standing reputation in the business as a premium window manufacturer.

Are Andersen windows the best windows available for you purpose? That question is open to a lot of subjective thought. It really depends on what your individual need is. Although Andersen windows are highly rated and industry recommended doesn't make them best for every need.

Many factors will need to be reviewed to determine which windows will be best for your particular need. Price for most people is usually a strong consideration, as is functionality and design. Andersen may not generally produce a window design that suits your need where as another manufacturer may have that very design and style as a readily available model.

It has been reported in recent years that Andersen windows hardware is not making the grade that it once did, and that other manufactures are scoring far better in fit and function in regards to hardware.

The Andersen Window Company might be a good choice for more reasons than Just quality windows. Price aside, the company has in recent years gone on a Green and Lean campaign. Which as we all know in our ever growing global crisis, the greener the better when it comes to environmental issues. They have spent considerable time and money doing research and development into ways of making their products more Eco friendly.

Andersen now employs a very long list of innovative strategies that allow it to better utilize the raw materials that are processed in its facilities there by reducing waist and cutting back on processing energy usage. Most major manufactures of any kind have adopted such plans, but Andersen has taken them several steps further and created an entire line of window products that are manufactured with a large percentage of recycled materials.

The "Renewal by Andersen" branded products are made from a composite material that blends the best attributes of thermoplastics and wood fibers. Although much of the material is reclaimed directly from the company's manufacturing plant operations, to maintain the touted Green Seal certification that the company uses to promote the products with, there must be a verifiable amount of reclaimed material used in the production.

The one thing that I see as an issue is that the windows do not contain any post-consumer recycled content. Still all in all, the company is moving in the right direction, using material once discarded as waste to manufacture its products is a step in the right direction. Now if they could find a way to make that same product from post-consumer recycled content then we could all stand up and cheer the company on.

I have seen in places where sales people, using high pressure sales tactics have duped people into sales contracts that have cost them a bundle, but I don't believe that this is directly related to the Anderson Window Company but rather to unscrupulous dealers who are most likely acting outside of the approved corporate sales design model.

Choosing Gutters for Your Home

Gutters: every house needs them, but unlike when the paint on your home cracks and fades and you notice from a distance that there's a problem, when it comes to gutters not everyone pays attention. Says Anthony Delmedico of Abelard Construction, "if you just walk outside of your home after it's been raining and you catch a drip from your gutter, you might not think much of it. There's a point in time, though, when you're going to find that the drip was just the tip of the iceberg and that the gutters need to be replaced."

It is true: there are plenty of times when a drip from the gutters is an indication that you have a clog along the way and, if you were to head up to the roof and clear out some leaves, the problem would be an easy fix. However, you're also going to find that there are times when the issue isn't just a minor leak; instead, what you thought was just an inconvenience has led to a leak so severe that there are problems with rot in your roof or in the siding of your home or that the water is leaking into your basement.

Where do you turn when you realize that the issue with your gutters isn't something that you can let slide or that you can handle on your own? According to Anthony Delmedico, you should turn to a contractor who you will be able to count on. "You're going to want to be sure that you are looking at gutters for your home that are well made, the right style for your home and that will fit into your budget as well."

In other words, a good contractor will not just be able to install new gutters and help to repair any damage that has been done as a result of the leak, but your contractor should also help you to learn more about the different types of gutters that are available to you.

For example, your contractor is going to be able to tell you about vinyl gutters and the benefits and drawbacks of them. If you live in an area where the temperature changes dramatically throughout the year - in New England where the summer temperatures can reach close to 100 degrees and winter temperatures can stay below 0 for days at a time, for example - vinyl gutters are not really going to be an option. Aluminum gutters are also affordable for those on a tight budget and will hold up to the weather in ways that vinyl won't.

However, that doesn't mean that aluminum gutters are right for everyone. "If you don't want to do a lot to maintain your gutters, it's a better idea to go with steel than aluminum," says Delmedico who also suggests that those who want low maintenance gutters stay away from copper gutters that need to be treated.

Gutters are definitely not something that can be looked at with a one size fits all approach; when you're choosing gutters, make sure that you know what your options are and which will be best for your needs - and make sure that you've got the right person installing them.

Patio doors are usually made of wood, but may also be made of fibre glass, aluminium, or steel. Security is an important consideration in choosing a patio door, and multi-point locking systems are available. Patio doors may consist of simple fixed and hinged panels, they may have bypass sliding operation, or they may slide and fold.

Slide and fold patio doors have the benefit that they can open the whole side of the room to the outside space. PVCU patio doors are convenient to operate for everyone in the home. PVCU patio doors are also aesthetically appealing as they can transform the look and feel of your home, and add considerable value too.

Patio door repair is common, especially for sliding patio doors. If your patio door is having trouble sliding open or closed, first put your head down on the ground and see if the wheels have come off the track. You may be able to simply refit the patio door on the track. Newer patio doors have double contact points that better distribute the door's weight and minimize this wear, but your patio door may have only a single contact point. A new stainless steel cap should work for this patio door repair.

The latest PVCU patio doors are highly energy efficient due to the inherent insulation of our multi-chamber PVC-U profiles and advanced energy-saving glass technology.

A rated window is now considered best practice by the Energy Savings Trust and automatically awarded the coveted Energy Savings Recommendations logo. The reason why they are awarded with this logo is they exploit much less energy and therefore have less of an environmental impact. Also, they are cheaper to run.

In order to win this logo, the product needs to pass through the strict criteria set by an independent panel. When the PVCu, uPVC, PVC window have this logo, it makes it quick and easy to spot the most energy efficient windows on the market. These ratings have been created by the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC).

The A rated Windows, A rated PVCu, uPVC and PVC windows mean that these are the products that help conserve heat in the winter and cut back on heating bills. The windows also keep your property cool in the summer as well as reducing mist and condensation which has often been a problem with existing double glazing.

The rating is based on u-value, solar factor and also air leakage value. To obtain the rating all factors must be balanced such as minimal air leakage through existing windows as well as the amount of solar heat that gets through the glass.

Currently, the British Fenestration Council's Window Energy Rating scheme is a non-mandatory system, calculates the overall energy efficiency of glazing products. Shoppers have been benefited by this system as it is easier for them way to distinguish between less eco-friendly alternatives and the top energy saving A rated window. Looking at the A rated windows may be useful, as they can save you a lot of money and maybe worth putting that initial investment in.

This 'A' rating is determined by the combining factors that will contribute towards loss of energy. These are: Heat loss, Heat loss through air infiltration and Solar Heat Gain. The British Fenestration Ratings Council have put this scheme together for windows, Washing Machines, Vehicles and other products, to help buyers save both money and the environment. This scheme is recognised for a range of items.
